When The Student is Ready, The Teacher Will Appear

June 4 2023

I truly believe that I can hear the same lesson multiple times over multiple years and then suddenly it becomes clear. Has that happened to you? My good painting friend, Helen Shideler and I have discussed endlessly about an internal hunger to improve our painting skills, both technically and artistically. It is what sometimes keeps me awake at night  and distracted during the day.

I once saw a meme on a T-shirt that read, “I know you are talking to me, but I am thinking about painting”. I am embarrassed to admit that can be true.   I am still working on the artistic but recently two sources came to me that will help develop my skills technically.

Teacher #1. I am currently taking online workshops through the Art Journey with TJ Cunningham. And I am delighted with the content and delivery of the lessons. TJ (Tim) is genuinely supportive and engaging. There have been many eureka moments for me.  He does offer a free trial which is how I signed up and I definitely recommend checking ii out.

We are focusing on composition of the landscape over the next 6 weeks. This has made me look at designing my seascapes in a totally different way.  Instead of looking at at my source and then finding a design within that, I am excited to design first then fit the elements into that design.  I will let you know how that works out.

Teacher #2.  When the wife of an elderly friend passed away years ago, I was gifted her studio easel, paints, brushes and boxes of books. I had glanced through one well work copy of the Adventure in Marine Painting by Stanley Woodward (1947/53) a few times but it lacked the pizzazz of some of my newer books. In all honestly, I was not ready for it. While I began exploring the opportunities of my new design process, I picked up this book and browsed through the pages. It was the right information at the right time for me. And with the request for several new seascapes from my local gallery, I am excited to get to work.  To quote the preface. “One thing you must possess- that is a love of the sea”. That, my friends, is at the core of why I paint waves. Now, excuse me while I go make a splash.
